Well, er we do actually!
Dealing with the public every day can be difficult, and nobody knows it better than those who work in the customer service industry.
The saying may be that “the customer is always right,” but not at the expense of an individuals pride and self-worth. Customers aren’t in the right when they are belligerent and belittling towards other people. One tactic here may be to ask them to put their complaint in writing, by which time they may have calmed down!
While many customer service jobs involve working face to face with customers, if you’re working at a call centre, the potential for abuse from customers can be even greater since they’re most likely calling you because they have a problem. If a customer gets angry, avoid responding in kind and don’t take anything too personally.
Be sympathetic of their plight and refer them to management if necessary, but realize that they’re complaining about things that are completely unrelated to you as an individual.
If you treat everyone with respect, then most of the time you will get respect in return. Adopting a positive attitude, means that small things are less likely to get you down.
The best advice is to maintain a sense of perspective-they’re 90% water anyway!

Hi Mike,
Good post. I deal with customers all the time in the shops and you are right in what you say.
Enjoy the journey.

Hi Mandy
Its never great when you’re face to face with somebody who’s being totally unreasonable, but there you go.
Thanks 4 the post.
Best wishes

Hi Mike,
I actually gave up working in the retail and entertainment industry because of being constantly abused by customers. Sometimes I feel that customers often think they have the right to abuse you because they are paying you. I had to constantly remind myself that it was there issue not mine.
I think the world has gone through a phase of bad customer service and the customers are now retaliating!
I like the water analogy!
I will have to remember that one!
Cheers

Hi Jacinta
Glad you liked it
.
Actually, the customer stops always being right ALL the time when you make the move from being employed to being self employed. Thereafter, if somebody is being really ******, you can choose to have nothing more to do with them!
Best wishes
Mike
